Active Membership
Any member of the Yale community is welcome to attend YSACNAS events throughout the semester and is considered a General Member.
Active members are more actively engaged in the YSACNAS community as evidenced by the active membership requirement outlined below. These requirements aim to mutually support the member and the chapter work toward the individual and collective goal of supporting recruitment, retention, and success of URM and BIPOC trainees in the sciences through engagement of our 3 branches: professional development, science outreach, and social and community development.
Active membership status will be confirmed at the end of each semester. If you would like to be considered for active membership fall 2022-2023, please register your intent below by the beginning of reading period!
Benefits
In addition to helping YSACNAS keep better track of membership each semester, Active YSACNAS members will benefit in the following ways:
Paid National Membership
YSACNAS will help Active YSACNAS members upgrade to Paid National Membership status for the following semester.
SWAG
Active members will get to choose a piece of YSACNAS swag each semester they hold active membership (Swag availability will vary from year to year).
CV Building
Active YSACNAS membership provides a clearer definition of activities and and commitment to YSACNAS efforts that active members can reference on their CVs.
Member-Specific
Requests
YSACNAS occasionally receives request for participation on panels, fireside chats, volunteer opportunities, etc. While we will include these opportunities in General Body newsletters, we may follow-up more directly with specific active members we know are engaged with YSACNAS activities and goals.
Voting Privileges
As actively engaged members of the YSACNAS community, we will look to active members first to help shape the future of YSACNAS.
Current and former Active members will have priority in the voting process for the upcoming year's executive board.
Preparation for Eboard
Engagement with each branch of YSACNAS events exposes participants to expectations of various Eboard branches and positions. This exposure to and networking with the General Body connects active members with current membership and Executive Board members for nomination to Executive Board positions for the upcoming year. Nomination calls will still be open to the General Body, but active members will be better prepared with the tools and know-how of existing positions to tailor their platform blurbs to the existing needs of the chapter.
Requirements
Active members will have participated in the YSACNAS chapter by fulfilling the following requirements by the beginning of the reading period for the current semester. If you are unable to meet these requirements, but still wish to be considered for active membership, please email the president or ysacnas@gmail.com by the end of the reading period for the current semester.

Register as an official national SACNAS member here.
Free membership registrations fulfills this requirement.
Note: Paid membership grants access to applying for travel awards and presentations at NDiSTEM.
1 General Body
Meeting
There will be 3 General Body meetings per semester where we come together as a community to network, socialize, share major updates, and discuss the semester's theme/topic.
1 Outreach Event
There will be at least 1 major outreach event per semester hosted by YSACNAS. While we encourage members to attend this event there are also events hosted by other organizations that YSACNAS will encourage members to attend (HYPE events).
Attending either a YSACNAS or HYPE Outreach event will fulfill this requirement.
1 Social Event
There will be at least 3 major social events per semester hosted by YSACNAS. While we encourage members to attend these events there are also events hosted by other organizations that YSACNAS will encourage members to attend (HYPE events).
Attending either a YSACNAS or HYPE Social event will fulfill this requirement.
1 Professional Development Event
There will be at least 3 major professional development events per semester hosted by YSACNAS. There are also ongoing YSACNAS professional development events such as the mentorship program, study hours, and working groups throughout the semester. While we encourage members to attend these events there are also events hosted by other organizations that YSACNAS will encourage members to attend (HYPE events).
Attending either a YSACNAS or HYPE Professional Development event will fulfill this requirement.
Complete End-of-Semester Survey
We will email this survey a week before the semester's reading period to folks completed the requirements for active membership status earlier in the semester.
In this survey we will ask about events you attended throughout the semester and get feedback on how you feel the semester went.
